Commandant's Message

Wow, two weeks as your Detachment Commandant and I have not stopped yet, Jr. Past Commandant Prosuh was not kidding when he told me I would be busy. But seriously, it is a privilege and an honor to serve as your Detachment Commandant and I am humbled that you have the faith in me to lead this detachment to be the best detachment in the Department of Florida. We have been very fortunate to have the talented staff and officers that have led us to this point and I have every confidence that your current officers are up to the challenge to keep the momentum going.

November has been a very busy month starting with the 238th Birthday Ball, which was the biggest one yet held at Broken Sound Club; and a great time was had by all as 612 Marines and their guest’s celebrated the birthday of our beloved Corps. On Veterans Day we had several detachment members who proudly held our banner and formed the only color guard that stayed in step, who marched in the Stuart parade and memorial ceremony. Also, two of our own detachment members LTCOL. Tim Taylor and MSGT. William “Gonzo” Gonzalez gave their personal accounts of their participation in the Gulf War at the Blake Library on 9 Dec to a crowd of attentive guests followed by a question and answer session in our latest public education program.

Then on 16 November 2013 our 5 man color carried, for the first time, the new POW/MIA flag donated by Jr. Past Commandant Prosuh, along with our national flag and MCL organizational flag, and marched in the dedication ceremony for the new Veteran’s Memorial Bridge in Palm City. I would like to thank all of our dedicated members and especially our color guard who has given so much of their time to prepare and practice to ensure the public sees only the best that we, as Marines do each and every day.

There are many more events coming upon us very quickly and I ask that you come out and support our detachment by volunteering your time and talents to help us achieve our mission. Our detachment is sponsoring a lunch at Duffy’s on Northlake Blvd for wheelchair vets from the West Palm Beach VA medical center on 2 Dec. 2013 at 1200. After that, we are performing a flag retirement ceremony followed by a spaghetti dinner to be held at the Stuart Elks Lodge on Sunday, 8 December 2013. The Elks are donating ‘every penny’ they make to our Detachment! They are doing this to help us further our mission and we need volunteers for the ceremony and to serve the chow to guests as well.

We still need rifle team members to form a squad ready to render military honors to our fallen Marines and perform special functions as well. I would like to have a rifle team and a bugler for the flag retirement to put on a great ceremony for our hosting lodge, they have never had a flag retirement ceremony and we are honored they asked us to provide it. If you are able to volunteer for any of these events please contact me to let me know what you are able to provide.

Your officers and I have met and discussed many ideas and projects for the upcoming year to help our detachment stay strong and in the public eye. There are many great things we will be bringing to you for your thoughts and ideas for promoting the values of our Corps and what we do for our fellow Marines and veterans as well as, the fun things and gatherings for our members. The next year to come will be exciting times for all of us, and I look forward to doing what Marines do best, which is taking care of each other and carry out the mission. Again, I ask all of you to honor us by attending our monthly meetings and participating in any of our upcoming events. In closing, I would like to wish all of you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah. Please keep all of our brothers and sisters deployed in harm’s way in your thoughts, and pray for their safe return home to their families.

Semper Fidelis,
Cary Haerlin
